NATIONAL JUDICIAL INSTITUTE

The Rt. Hon. Antonio Lamer, P.C., Chief Justice of Canada and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the National Judicial Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. George Thomson as Executive Director of the National Judicial Institute for a two-year term. Chief Justice Lamer stated “Mr. Thomson’s skills and experience are a perfect match for the NJI. We are lucky to have him join us”.
The National Judicial Institute is a federally and provincially funded body with a mandate to develop judicial education programs for federally and provincially appointed judges throughout Canada.
Mr. Thomson graduated in law from Queen’s University and the University of California. He practised law from 1968 to 1972, at which time he was appointed a judge of the Provincial Court of Ontario. From 1985 to 1988 he served as Director of Education for the Law Society of Upper Canada. He has been a Deputy Minister in both the Ontario and federal governments, most recently serving as Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General of Canada from 1994 to 1998.
Mr. Thomson, who is bilingual, is presently acting as a Special Advisor to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General. His appointment as Executive Director of the National Judicial Institute is effective January 1, 2000. He will be taking over from Judge Dolores Hansen who served very ably as Executive Director of the NJI for 6 years, and who has kindly agreed to stay on for an interim period.

Le très honorable Antonio Lamer, c.p., Juge en chef du Canada et président du conseil d’administration de l’Institut national de la magistrature est heureux d’annoncer la nomination de M. George Thomson au poste de directeur général de l’Institut pour un mandat de deux ans. D’affirmer le juge en chef Lamer «M. Thomson possède exactement les compétences et l’expérience dont a besoin l’Institut. Nous sommes heureux qu’il se joigne à nous».
Organisme financé par les gouvernements fédéral et provinciaux, l’Institut national de la magistrature a pour mission d’élaborer des programmes de formation à l’intention des juges nommés par le fédéral et par les provinces dans l’ensemble du Canada.
M. Thomson est diplômé en droit de l’université Queen’s et de la University of California. Il a exercé le droit de 1968 à 1972, date à laquelle il a été nommé juge à la Cour provinciale de l’Ontario. De 1985 à 1988, il a été directeur de la formation au Barreau du Haut-Canada. Il a également été sous-ministre au sein du gouvernement de l’Ontario ainsi qu’au sein du gouvernement fédéral, où il a occupé le poste de sous-ministre de la Justice et sous-procureur général du Canada de 1994 à 1998.
M. Thomson, qui est bilingue, est présentement conseiller spécial auprès de madame le ministre de la Justice et procureur général du Canada. Sa nomination au poste de directeur général de l’Institut national de la magistrature prend effet le 1er janvier 2000. Il remplacera le juge Dolores Hansen qui, après avoir occupé ce poste de façon très compétente pendant six années, a aimablement accepté d’assurer l’intérim.
