Dear Minister:

 

At the end of December I will be commencing my 31^st year as a Superior and Appellate Court judge, 20 of which were spent on the Supreme Court of Canada, and for 10 of those 20 years I was Chief Justice of the Court and of Canada.   Having heard 1,317 cases on the Supreme Court and written reasons in 345 of them, I have decided to hang up my robes early in the next millennium.

 

As Chief Justice of Canada it has been a pleasure to work with you and your predecessors for the better interest of our lovable country.  I must also say that the successive governments of Canada I have known while on the Court have always treated it with respect and have always acceded to the requests that were made by the Court for purposes of improving our services to the public.

 

I am, therefore, officially advising you that I will be resigning my functions on the Court as its Chief Justice and as a judge effective January 7^th, 2000.

Madame le ministre,

 

Fin décembre, j’entamerai ma 31^e année comme juge de cour supérieure et de cour d’appel, ce qui inclut vingt ans passés à la Cour suprême du Canada dont dix comme Juge en chef de la Cour et du Canada.  Après avoir entendu 1,317 affaires en Cour suprême et écrit des motifs dans 345 d’entre elles, j’ai décidé de raccrocher ma toge au tout début du prochain millénaire.

 

En tant que Juge en chef du Canada, j’ai eu le plaisir de travailler avec vous et vos prédécesseurs dans l’ intérêt de notre cher pays.  Je dois aussi dire que les gouvernements canadiens successifs que j’ai connus pendant que j’étais à la Cour l’ont toujours traitée avec respect et ont toujours accédé aux demandes qu’elle faisait pour améliorer ses services au public.

 

Je vous avise donc officiellement que je résignerai mes fonctions à la Cour comme Juge en chef et juge le 7 janvier 2000.

 

Je vous prie d’agréer, Madame le Ministre, l’expression de ma haute considération.
