OTTAWA, October 1, 1997 The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, the Right Honourable Antonio Lamer, P.C., welcomed the appointment today of Mr. Justice Michel Bastarache, from the New Brunswick Court of Appeal, to the Supreme Court of Canada. He expressed his congratulations to Justice Bastarache personally today in a telephone conversation. The Chief Justice stated, “I am very pleased that the Prime Minister made an appointment quickly, as the Court beings its Fall session next week.” Mr. Justice Bastarache has indicated to the Chief Justice that he is eager to begin his work on the Court and will be in a position to do so very soon.

OTTAWA, le 1er octobre 1997 Le Juge en chef de la Cour suprême du Canada, le très honorable Antonio Lamer, c.p. se réjouit de la nomination du juge Michel Bastarache de la Cour d’appel du Nouveau-Brunswick. Il a exprimé ses félicitations au juge Bastarache au téléphone ce jour-même. Le Juge en chef a déclaré “Je suis très heureux que le Premier Ministre ait procédé rapidement à cette nomination, car la Cour commence sa session d’automne la semaine prochaine”. Monsieur le juge Bastarache a indiqué au Juge en chef qu’il avait hâte d’entreprendre son travail à la Cour et qu’il pourrait le faire très rapidement.
