Justice LeBel to join Supreme Court of Canada
The Minister of Justice, the Honourable Anne McLellan, announced today that Justice Louis LeBel of the Quebec Court of Appeal will become the newest member of the Supreme Court of Canada. A vacancy on the Court was created when Chief Justice Antonio Lamer announced his retirement from the Court, effective January 7, 2000. Chief Justice Lamer, when informed of the appointment, stated “I am delighted and honoured that my successor is such an eminent jurist as Justice LeBel. He is known to be a fine judge and will bring to the Court a great deal of wisdom and knowledge at this important point in the Court’s history.”
Justice McLachlin, who will be appointed Chief Justice of Canada on January 12, 2000 said “I have no doubt that Justice LeBel will be a great asset to the Court. I am particularly pleased that he will be in a position to take up his duties in time for the opening of the Winter Session on January 17th. We will have a full complement of judges available to tackle the upcoming cases on our agenda.”
A date has not yet been set for the swearing-in of Justice LeBel, nor for the official Court ceremony welcoming him to the Court.

Nomination du juge LeBel à la Cour suprême du Canada
La Ministre de la Justice, l’honorable Anne McLellan, a annoncé aujourd’hui que le juge Louis LeBel de la Cour d’appel du Québec deviendra le nouveau juge de la Cour suprême du Canada. Une vacance à la Cour a été créée lorsque le Juge en chef Lamer a annoncé qu’il prendrait sa retraite à compter du 7 janvier 2000. Lorsque le Juge en chef Lamer a été informé de cette nomination, il a déclaré “Je suis très heureux et honoré que mon successeur soit un juriste aussi éminent que le juge LeBel. Il est connu pour ses remarquables qualités de juge et apportera à la Cour une bonne dose de sagesse et de connaissances à ce moment important de son histoire”.
Le juge McLachlin, qui prêtera son serment d’office comme Juge en chef du Canada le 12 janvier 2000, a dit “ Je n’ai aucun doute que le juge LeBel sera un réel atout pour la Cour. Je suis particulièrement contente qu’il puisse prendre son poste à temps pour l’ouverture de la session d’hiver le 17 janvier. Notre Cour sera au grand complet pour aborder les affaires inscrites au rôle”.
Ni la date de la prestation de serment du juge LeBel, ni celle de la cérémonie officielle pour marquer son arrivée à la Cour ne sont encore fixées.
